At the U9 level for the 2009-10 season,we received a fairly sizeable influx of new players, most of whom had not previously played league soccer. Each of our 4 teams: Braga, Clan, Grasshoppers and Volcanoes has had to work very hard to integrate the new players and bring them up to speed while supporting and nurturing the existing players, some of whom have been with KLM since the age of 5. We are very lucky to have an exceptionally patient, dedicated and enthusiastic group of coaches and assistant coaches who make playing soccer such a worthwhile experience for the kids. They are: Jescel Mondragon, Ryan DeHaan, Nic Maric, Paul Clarke, Marcel Shoenenberger, Wayne Kaulbach, Omar Hassine and Aart Van Gorkum. The Grasshoppers and Volcano teams (supplemented by players from the Clan) played in The West Side Soccer Tournament at Douglas Park on a stunning fall day over the Thanksgiving Weekend. The Grasshoppers and Volcanoes played 5 games against top teams from all over the Lower Mainland - some of them select teams. Both teams won a few and lost a few more, but the kids had a blast - cheering each other on and hanging out together on such a gorgeous soccer day. It was an excellent exercise in team building. The Grasshoppers and Volcanoes also played in a tournament at Sportstown in Richmond on Remembrance Day. The Volcanoes had almost their full roster at the tournament and the Grasshoppers had a good response from their players but a few were sick on the day of the tournament. The first game of the tournament for the two teams was: Grasshoppers vs: Volcanoes - a very tense game as the players who know each other so well vied for control of the ball to win a spot in the finals. The final score was 0-0 and the two teams went on to play two more games but neither ended up qualifying for the finals. Once again, the Grasshoppers and Volcanoes experienced playing some of the best players in their age group in the Lower Mainland. Each time they are exposed to that higher level of play, they try a little harder, expect a little bit more of themselves and come away as more confident players |
