The Vancouver Parks Board has picked Memorial Park (East 41st between Fraser and Knight) as the location for a new artificial turf field to be completed by the spring of 2011. This is potentially good news for the soccer community. A field hockey club, however, is promoting a surface friendly to their sport which is not conducive to soccer. This would mean little or no access for KLM and other east-side soccer clubs or east-side high schools. On February 8, 2010, the Park Board approved the installation of a lit synthetic turf playfield on the southwest field at Memorial South Park, as well as an upgrade to the Memorial South running track. In preparation for the Park Board's application for Development Permit for the field lighting, an open house will be held to allow the public to view detailed plans, and to ask questions of Park Board staff. If it’s a field hockey friendly surface, it will be like playing on a flat carpet stretched over a concrete floor. It will be the same type of surface that is being currently used at Eric Hamber. VYSA does not schedule any soccer games at Eric Hamber because it is not a soccer friendly surface and it poses more of a risk for injury than other surfaces. Give community youth soccer a voice by writing to the Parks Board Chair. The Parks Board needs to hear from us individually as voters, parents and coaches. The West side clubs promoted a similar write in campaign for the construction of Point Grey turf and they were able to get over 600 write in letters and emails. Here’s what you can do:
